Our Past!

A Brief History

Clacton Camera Club started in 1936 but had to be
disbanded in 1939 due to the outbreak of the second world war. The club was
restarted in 1946 and of the six members at that first meeting three are still alive today. The Club was lucky to have six very energetic members who immediately set about organising social events to raise funds and advertising for members. They quickly established a programme that included talks from Club members, visiting speakers, social events, competitions and battles with other clubs. When visiting other clubs the members would often have to travel by bus as few people owned cars all those years ago. In the early days the Club had a number of different venue’s and membership fluctuated from a high of about seventy to a low of around twenty.

With a move to our present venue, The Friends Meeting House, in the 1970`s the Club became more established and the membership settled at around sixty. Whilst the aim of the Club has always been to improve and promote the range and standard of photography in the area, the twin objective has been to make friends through photography and establish an enjoyable social atmosphere within the Club. The new millennium sees the Club well established with an increasing membership under strong leadership from the chairman and an enthusiastic membership supporting social events and Club competitions.
